Wood Processors Association

Forest & Wood Conference 2009

Informing and Connecting our Members and Stakeholders

Thursday 8th and Friday 9th October 2009, Seifrieds Winery, Nelson

Conference Overview

On Thursday 8 & 9 October WPA partnered with the New Zealand Forest Owners Association (FOA) and delivered the Annual Conference and Field Day, an informative, advisory and networking event for the wider Timber Industry.

The conference was a reflection of the increasing co-ordination across the sector and drew together senior members of the processing and forestry growing sectors. In light of the current difficult economic situation a meeting of the growers and processors was critical for the overall profitability of the sector and ensuring a whole-of-value-chain discussion when considering the challenges ahead for the industries.

The purpose of the conference was to examine ways of improving productivity and establishing marketing opportunities for the whole sector even though the sector does not operate in a vertically integrated fashion. It was focused on global trends, the current trading environment and the challenges and issues that this presented.  The conference featured presentations from the industry and invited guests including overseas market leaders, followed by a day of field trips explaining both growing and processing operations in the Nelson region.

The conference was designed to present a diverse range of international and national experts discussing their views and experience within three key areas:
  • The Markets:  World market trends and a New Zealand perspective
  • Market Innovation:  Innovation success - what can we learn and where are the opportunities
  • Energy Trends:  Efficiency and diversity

Record attendance was achieved with 178 people involved during the day and overall the conference was a huge success with tremendous feedback all round
